Smiling man

Veneers

No one is born with a perfect smile, and perfect hygiene habits can still fall short of giving us the smile we've always wanted.

Using veneers, Dr. Jeffrey S. Kearney can conceal minor cosmetic flaws and give you the beautiful smile you've always desired.

Let’s take a look at how veneers placed by Dr. Kearney in Cary, NC, can enhance your smile…

What Are Veneers?

Dental veneers are thin, custom-crafted pieces of porcelain that are placed over the front of a tooth to conceal various cosmetic flaws. Veneers look like your natural teeth and can withstand the pressures of chewing. Veneers are a cosmetic dentistry treatment that can improve the appearance of your smile and boost your confidence. To prepare a tooth to receive a veneer, a small amount of tooth enamel is removed from the tooth surface. This allows the veneer to lay flush with surrounding teeth and avoid looking bulky or unnatural.

Benefits of Our Veneers

Many of our dental patients choose veneers to improve their smile because veneers are:

Versatile

While most other cosmetic treatments target a specific problem, veneers can address multiple issues one tooth at a time.

Long-lasting

Dental porcelain can last 10-20 years with proper care.

Natural-looking

Porcelain absorbs and reflects light like your natural teeth, and are crafted to match the color and dimensions of surrounding teeth. As a result, our porcelain veneers will have others admiring your beautiful smile, not your dental work.

Confidence-boosting

By concealing cosmetic flaws, our porcelain veneers can give you the beautiful smile you've always wanted and improve your self-image.

Stain-resistant

Despite our best efforts, our teeth can become stained or discolored over time. Luckily, porcelain resists stains, so your bright smile can last with proper care.

Good Candidates for Veneers

While veneers can be a great solution to cosmetic issues for most dental patients, others may not be the best candidates for the treatment. When determining whether porcelain veneers are right for you, Dr. Kearney will consider your:

Oral Health

Veneer patients should have good oral health, with no active cavities, gum disease, or other issues. We can place veneers when you have recovered from the procedures needed to resolve these issues.

Tobacco Use

Your veneers need a healthy smile foundation, and tobacco is very harmful to your oral health. Meanwhile, you can expect that tobacco will stain your veneer and surrounding teeth. For the longest-lasting and best-looking results, drop the habit before receiving veneers.

Enamel Condition

Since veneers require a small layer of enamel to be removed, you need enough enamel to accommodate the veneer without compromising the stability of the tooth. As a result, patients with thin or worn layers of enamel may not be good candidates for veneers.

You can learn more about your candidacy for veneers and other dentistry treatments during a consultation at our Cary office.

Veneer Treatment Timeline

Our Cary practice can customize our veneers to match the size, shape, and color of your natural teeth.

Procedure Steps

Our Cary practice can customize our veneers to match the size, shape, and color of your natural teeth.

Consultation

Regardless of the treatment, it will always start with a consultation with our dentist. Dr. Kearney will listen to your needs and recommend treatments according to the results you would like to see. We will then discuss any proposed treatments in-depth so you understand all aspects of a procedure before choosing it.

Preparation

If you're a good candidate for veneers, we will schedule an appointment to prepare your teeth. During this stage, a thin layer of enamel will be removed to make room for your veneers. Dr. Kearney will then take mess-free digital impressions of the treated teeth using the advanced iTero® scanner.

Crafting

We will send the impressions of your teeth to our partner lab, where technicians will craft your custom veneers using premium dental porcelain. Your dental veneers should arrive for the final fitting in around two to three weeks.

Temporaries

While waiting for your custom veneers, you'll need to wear a temporary set of veneers to protect your treated teeth. Temporary veneers allow you to return to your daily routine during the waiting period, but you should try to avoid eating hard or sticky foods. Dr. Kearney will provide instructions for taking care of temporary veneers.

Placement

Once your permanent veneers have arrived, we will remove the temporary set and test the fit of your custom veneers. After you are satisfied with the fit and appearance of your veneers, Dr. Kearney will secure them in place. This treatment requires no recovery. You can begin enjoying your new smile right away.

Aftercare

Patients should follow these steps to maximize the lifespan of their veneers:

Practice good hygiene habits

Dental patients should brush and floss twice a day to maintain their oral health and the condition of their porcelain veneers.

Avoid biting hard things

Bad habits such as opening packages with your teeth or chewing ice, fingernails, and pencils can damage your porcelain veneers.

Schedule regular checkups

Our dentist can check the condition of your porcelain veneers and provide useful tips for taking care of them during regular checkups.

Dr. Kearney will provide a full list of instructions on how to take care of your dental veneers after the treatment.
